Fixed or adjustable frame? Choose the right type of door frame for your interior
Choosing a door is only part of the process. An equally important element is the door frame, which ensures the correct operation of the leaf and plays a decorative role. We tell you what the different types of door frames are and how to choose the best one.
What is the role of door frames?
What is a frame? A door frame is nothing more than a frame that is permanently fixed to the wall of the entrance, in which the door is fitted with hinges. The door frame has both a structural (the frames hold the door in position and seal it) and a design role. It is important to choose a variant that matches both the door leaf and the overall design of the room.
Frame materials
A frame of the same material as the door leaf is the most common choice, as consistency of design is important to many people. However, an equally interesting styling solution is to combine different materials, such as a steel frame and a wooden door. Wooden doorframes are popular – they are durable, robust and emphasise the cosy atmosphere of the interior. However, wood is quite an expensive investment, so there are many door frames on the market made of wood-based materials, such as MDF. On the other hand, a metal door frame, a steel frame or an aluminium door frame is strong, resistant to moisture and mechanical damage. They present a somewhat austere appearance, but in many interior styles this effect is desirable, which is why they are popularly chosen for loft-style or modern rooms.
Door frame types
The main division of doorframes includes fixed and adjustable doorframes, although an important decision to make is also whether the door should be rebated or non-rebated. In some cases, on the other hand, a concealed or overlay frame will be the ideal solution.
Adjustable frame
An adjustable frame is a good choice for interiors with a typical wall thickness and the only choice for interiors with thick walls or uneven walls. Its design is such that the dimensions of the adjustable frame can be modified as required, and it adapts flexibly to the walls. The only condition is that the walls must be min. 7.5 cm. The adjustable door frame is most often used in old buildings and townhouses and in those interiors where the walls do not hold the dimensions. In other cases, it is a popular choice due to its effortless installation.
The assembly of an adjustable frame is not difficult, but to make it easier, we include an assembly instruction for an adjustable frame. By the way, we recommend one of our flagship accessories, the adjustable tunnel frame.
Fixed frame
The fixed frame, also known as the block frame, works well for walls with a classic thickness of 6 to 10 cm. The width of the fixed frame is invariable and can therefore only be used in this case. The dimensions of the fixed frame are mainly used in new construction, where the walls are perfectly straight and even. In other situations, the choice of an adjustable frame remains. Installing a fixed frame requires precision and patience, but its price is a big advantage.
In order to facilitate the process of setting the frame, we provide instructions for assembling a fixed frame. We also recommend you take note of our fixed frame.
Rebated and non-rebated door frame
The next decision to be made is whether the door should be rebated or non-rebated. A rebated frame allows for the effect of a distinctive step between the door leaf and the frame. In such doors, the hinges are visible and the adjustment is simple. The rebated frame has a classic, simple design and is easy to install.

A rebated frame, on the other hand, allows you to achieve the effect of a single plane with the door when it is closed. In a rebate-free door, the hinges are retractable, but their adjustment is slightly more demanding. The installation of a rebate-free door frame is generally more work and time-consuming, and patience and precision are required.

Frame overlay
The overlay frame is a solution that allows the frame to be visually altered without having to remove the originally installed version. This is especially true in flats with metal frames, which is what was most often installed years ago. When we want to renovate a room and replace the door with a new one, the question of an unsightly and worn-out door frame remains. The ideal solution is an overlay frame on a metal door frame. This completely covers the old door frame without significantly reducing the size of the opening. We have an overlay frame in our range, and we include an overlay frame installation guide to make it easier to install.
How about a discreet concealed door frame?
A concealed door frame is a hidden construction that makes only the leaf and the handle visible. The concealed frame also has hidden hinges and the whole thing can only be seen when the door is opened. This solution is popular with lovers of modern and minimalist arrangements.
Which frame should I choose and what should I bear in mind before making a purchase?
There are many dilemmas ahead of you, including the key one: adjustable or fixed door frame? Study a few things calmly. Measure the thickness of the walls, check that they are even. These parameters may determine your choice. If not, choose the one whose installation method is more compatible with your skills. Also consider whether or not you want the door to be flush with the frame – this will determine whether you need a rebated or non-rebated frame.
