Loft doors – what kind of doors? An overview of the most fashionable designs
Doors play an important role in raw, minimalist and expressive loft design – their form, material and colour. Choosing a loft door is a decision you should take the time to make, and there are plenty to choose from. There are wooden, glass, sliding, folding and double-opening doors available on the market. Let’s take a look at each of them in turn.
Characteristics of the loft style
The loft style has many ardent admirers. Its enthusiasts dream of living in original post-industrial interiors converted into flats. There is soul, high ceilings, original installations and eye-catching design elements. However, if you don’t have much prospect for such a dwelling, you can arrange any space in the industrial spirit.
The Loft style is all about materials: brick, architectural concrete, glass, metal and wood. Furniture should be functional and simple in form, the fewer the better. Loft likes extensive space and frugal design. Loft interiors are usually kept in a fairly homogeneous colour scheme, which includes black, white, grey and brown. If you have a desire for more striking colours, you can introduce them in the form of accessories – cushions or posters.
To optically enlarge loft flats and deepen the impression of space, you should rely on mirrors and plenty of light. If you do not have high ceilings and large windows, use chandeliers, lamps and lights. Don’t go overboard with the accessories – preferably place graphics, vases, baskets, clocks and plants.
Loft doors: what makes them stand out?
By definition, the industrial style is not keen on doors, as one of its tenets is as open, expansive a space as possible with a minimum of partitions. However, everyday family life implies the need for intimacy and privacy for all members of the family, which is why, in practice, loft-style doors are necessary, sought after and eagerly chosen.
With this style, consistency of design is particularly important, so industrial doors should relate to other design elements – either in material or colour. Loft doors are often made of wood or MDF with a wood imitation veneer, although industrial doors are just as likely to be a tasteful combination of metal and glass. Loft interior doors are, on the one hand, intended to correspond perfectly with the interior design of the room, and on the other hand, to break up the austerity of this style somewhat and fulfil their practical purpose. An interesting solution is the combination of different colours and textures, e.g. the combination of a wood-coloured door with a black steel frame.
Wooden loft doors
Wooden loft doors are a classic in flats and houses decorated in this style. Miskant and Loft models from the ERKADO 2022 catalogue of wooden doors fit perfectly into such arranged spaces. Solid frame construction made of pine and oak wood, painted three times using the hydrodynamic method with water-based paints. The final effect is completed with black hinges and fittings, which allude to the industrial style. Another intriguing proposition is the Fragi 16 loft door. It is the quintessence of the trend, offering wood, glass and black within a single leaf. A walnut-coloured veneer frame with faithfully rendered grain surrounds a large sheet of black toughened glass (the veneer also adorns the handle!). This industrial wooden door will go perfectly with the wooden floor and furniture, as well as with the black metal bookcases and tables.
Loft glass doors
Next to wooden doors, loft glass doors are the most popular option for industrial interiors. The Graf loft glass doors, such as the Graf 39 and Graf 36 models, are ideal for such interiors. They are made of toughened glass and decorated with black decorative patterns. With the option of steel frames, the raw character of the interior can be emphasised. Glass loft doors make it possible to separate the room in question from the rest of the home, while at the same time perfectly fulfilling their decorative role, further emphasising the character of this style.
Sliding and folding loft doors: design possibilities
A very tasteful compromise between the assumptions of open space and the need for privacy is the loft sliding door. The LOFT sliding door system makes it possible to divide up the space in an unobtrusive manner. The use of the sliding system allows a great deal of space saving and at the same time emphasises the industrial character of the interior. The combination of veneer in natural wood colour with black elements is currently very popular. The combination can also be personalised by combining any colours of frame, sash, skirting boards, inlay or glazing colour.
Another option is loft bi-fold doors or folding doors. As a rule, these take the form of doors with muntins, i.e. a combination of glass and steel elements in black. Such models are elegant, stylish and help to create a loft atmosphere.
Loft doors, but not just for loft rooms
Loft doors are mainly associated with doors for flats and houses decorated in this trend. However, this is not the only space where they fit in perfectly and fulfil their role both practically and in terms of design. Industrial doors also find their way into modern and minimalist offices, where there is a lot of wood, metal, black and white. They are also an excellent choice for raw, crisp cafés or restaurants. Combined with wooden tables, sofas and armchairs in shades of grey or bottle green, as well as lots of plants, they create a delightful space that you don’t want to leave.
